my favorite youtube house tours: a playlist
the crème de la crème of interiors on the internet
Guys, I know I promised you all a finished house tour video this month, but I have faltered. Frankly, I’ve barely had time to sit down and knock out admin tasks, much less sit-down and learn how to use Final Cut Pro :’) So, in lieu of a homemade house tour, I’m going to share with you the crème de la crème of YouTube house tours. The ever-evolving comfort playlist that has fueled my love for interiors over the last 12 years. Honestly, this is gonna be VERY good.
** vicka’s house tour will see the light of day NEXT month. promise <3 enjoy this gallery and the photos in my first newsletter until then **
One of my most present personality traits is that I consume SO. MUCH. YouTube. Most people stream lots of shows and reality TV, but I feverishly check my YouTube subscription box like I’m being paid to do so. YouTube has been my media of choice since I was 18. There’s just nothing like the thrill of binging makeup hauls and watching Trisha Paytas deliver chaotic monologues on her kitchen floor.
Over the years, my subscription box has continued to get more unhinged in terms of # of genres. 2013 makeup tutorials, obscure YT drama, interiors and law & crime. All beloved. All have provided value to my life. Other than Trisha Paytas, who is undeniably in a class of her own, the one genre that has been a mainstay of my sub box is INTERIORS <3 I love being transported into someone’s space and hearing the stories associated with every person’s home – hence the purpose of this newsletter.
The rush of watching a ‘goooood’ house tour is my version of getting high. The visual stimulation + the surge of excitement I get from seeing a beautiful space and taking mental notes of all the things I want to do to my own home in the future = INSPIRATION SOUP.
So, without further ado, here is my ULTIMATE home tour playlist.
ENJOY
My favorite YouTube channels for house tours: Schumacher, House & Garden UK, Paige Wassel and Never Too Small. Honorable mention: Noah Daniel
This Wes Anderson-style video is EVERYTHING to me. Tatyana’s modern yet tactfully classic design style inspires me. This video makes me yearn for clean lines, warm color palettes and interesting moments.
In 2020, I went out on a whim and used some stimulus check money to buy Rita Konig’s Create Academy class all about how to design a space from scratch. This class was INCREDIBLE. 10/10 recommend Practical, beautiful and layered. I love the way Rita balances functionality with fresh color palettes and classic English charm. HIGHLY recommend. Oooh and her second course is coming out soon 👀
If you like snarky commentary and mid-century design inspiration, Paige Wassel is your gal. She’s currently an LA-based prop stylist but is from Chicago and started her YouTube channel there. During her most recent stint in Chi-Town, she archived the journey of re-designing her Chicago townhome, which included an INGENIOUS office/guest bedroom conversion. Her content is fuel for me when designing small spaces. Check out her prop work too – it’s fabulous.
Schumacher has some of the most beautifully edited videos I’ve watched on YouTube. And Barrie Benson’s Charlotte, NC home tour is no exception. I think what I love most about Barrie is the way she integrates her Southern context with a modern *BUT WARM* style. I’ve never seen anything like it.
Admittedly, most of the Never Too Small tours are a bit too minimal for my liking, but I do deeply appreciate the design approach and enjoy incorporating some of the principles into my style. I’m also a huge sucker for art nouveau and art deco. The primary color pops and the architectural design of this Sydney apartment are fabulous.
Homeworthy is a popular YouTube channel that posts multiple home tours daily. Most of these tours aren’t my vibe, but there are a handful that I find myself going back to over and over again. This home tour of Chef Romilly Newman’s NYC loft apartment is *chef’s kiss* // Pun intended. I love how Romilly mixes traditional + modern design.
Fun fact about me: I don’t like travel content. I like feeling at ease when I consume content, which is why I enjoy homey content. Taking me to different locales in each video is unnerving. The one exception?? Damon. Damon Dominque is a travel YouTuber that I’ve watched for years. He’s hilarious, sooo interesting and edits his videos like cinematic masterpieces. His Paris apartment tour is wonderful.
House & Garden UK is another one of my favorites for house tours. Sophie Ashby’s South African heritage is infused in all of her designs, and I’ve never loved banana yellow more thanks to her.
Another Paige Wassel video, what do ya know!! Paige has a YT series called ‘Check out this f***ing home* where she features the homes of creatives around the US (and even one in France). This tour of her friend Nana’s home is a California dream. Talk about cozy ~~
HONORABLE MENTION:
Not technically a home tour, per se, but Noah Daniel is a Copenhagen-based YouTuber whom I’ve recently discovered. His formal education and background in architecture and design provide the technical yang to Paige Wassel’s vibes-based yin.
Happy watching!
Off to explore the Windy City now. See y’all on Sunday <3
